The best preschool for your child is close to home. It is play-based. It has kind, trained teachers and small groups. It is signed up with the state. And it is open about safety, fees and daily updates. These five things matter more than a big brand name.

Looking for the best preschools in Mumbai? This guide will help. It comes from the early years team at MNR Golden Kids. We run 11 preschools in Navi Mumbai and Panvel, so we have this talk with parents every week.

Some call it a play school or a nursery. Here, we just say preschool. You will find a short checklist, the age rules for 2027-28, tips on fees, a guide by area, and the questions to ask on a visit.

What makes the best preschools in Mumbai stand out?

A preschool is your child’s first school away from home. Young kids learn best through play. That is the main idea of India’s National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage, set out in 2022. It covers kids aged 3 to 8.

So a good preschool does not send home stacks of worksheets. Kids talk, build, sing and paint. They ask lots of questions. And they come home happy.

Mumbai adds two more things to think about: traffic and choice. A good school 10 minutes away often beats a famous one 45 minutes away. A tired child learns less. With so many schools across the city, Navi Mumbai and Panvel, you need a clear way to compare them.

How we run our own preschools

Here is how we do things at MNR Golden Kids. You can use the same points to judge any school on your list.

  • We track growth every month. Each child’s teacher notes how they are doing, month by month.
  • We train for safety. Our staff repeat child safety training every two years.
  • We train our teachers. Our teachers are trained by the London School of Training, UK.
  • We teach through play. Kids learn to speak through stories, rhymes, show-and-tell and puppet play.
  • We start slowly. New children join with an orientation and a gentle settling-in time.

8-point checklist for the best preschools in Mumbai

1. A short, safe trip

Aim for 15 to 20 minutes door to door. If the school has a van, ask if a trained helper rides in it. Ask how they check who picks up your child.

2. Learning through play

Look for stories, rhymes, puzzles, art, music and outdoor play. There should be a calm daily routine too. Ask how the week’s plan helps your child grow in body, feelings, words and thinking.

3. Trained teachers and small groups

Ask what early years training each teacher has. Ask how long they have worked there. A good guide is one adult for every 6 to 8 kids in playgroup. In nursery, it is one adult for every 10 to 12 kids.

4. Safety you can see

  • CCTV in class, and a clear rule on who can watch it
  • A locked gate, a visitor book and a pick-up list
  • Small, clean toilets that kids can reach
  • Soft, tidy play areas and a first-aid kit
  • Staff with first-aid and child safety training

Ask to see these things on your visit, not just hear about them.

5. A school that is on the state list

Since 24 April 2025, Maharashtra asks private preschools for kids aged 3 to 6 to sign up on its Pre-School Registration Portal. The state also plans a new law to set clear rules for preschools. Ask each school if it has signed up.

6. Clear, regular updates

Good schools tell you what your child did each day or week. They raise worries early. Parent meetings should share real notes, not just marks.

7. A gentle start

Most kids take two to four weeks to settle. Ask how the school helps a child who cries at the gate. Shorter first days help. So does the same face at the door each day.

8. Clear fees

Ask for all fees in writing: the joining fee, the monthly or term fee, and every extra. Read the refund rules before you pay.

Montessori, play-way or Reggio Emilia?

Method What a day looks like Good for kids who
Montessori Hands-on tools, kids pick their own work, the teacher guides Like to work on their own, in a quiet way
Play-way Songs, stories, role play, craft and group games Learn by moving, talking and doing
Reggio Emilia Long projects built on kids’ own questions Ask “why?” all day
Mixed play-based A set routine plus play, stories, art, and first letters and numbers Need both freedom and a plan

No method is best for every child. Watch a class. If the kids look calm, busy and curious, it works.

Preschool admission age in Mumbai for 2027-28

Maharashtra uses your child’s age on 31 December of the school year. A 2022 state order set the lowest ages: 3 for nursery, 4 for junior KG, 5 for senior KG and 6 for Class 1. For 2027-28, that usually means:

Class Lowest age by 31 Dec 2027 Usual birth year Age at MNR Golden Kids
Playgroup Set by each school 2025 From 2 years
Nursery 3 years 2024 3 years
Junior KG 4 years 2023 4 years
Senior KG 5 years 2022 5 years
Class 1 6 years 2021 Moves to big school

There are also top age limits and a little give at the edges. So check the exact cut-off with each school.

Preschool admission timeline in Mumbai

  1. September to October: calls, open days and school visits
  2. November to December: forms and a short, friendly chat with your child
  3. January to February: offers, fees and seat booking
  4. Before June: an orientation and a slow start

Good schools fill up early. So October is the right time to start your visits for 2027-28. The chat is not a test. Don’t coach your child. The school just wants to see how they feel.

Missed these dates? Call anyway. Families move, and seats can open up in the middle of the year. Ask to join the wait list, and ask when they will call you back.

How much do preschools in Mumbai cost?

Fees vary a lot by area and brand. One 2026 study of well-known Mumbai preschools puts monthly fees at about ₹8,000 to ₹25,000. South Mumbai is at the top end. Joining fees and deposits are extra.

Compare the full yearly cost, not just the monthly fee. Parents often miss these costs:

  • Uniforms, books and kits
  • Annual day and event fees
  • Van or bus fees
  • Daycare or longer hours
  • Field trips and workshops

A high fee does not mean better teaching. Often you pay for the location and the name. Judge the teachers and the rooms instead.

Best preschools in Mumbai by area

Where you live should shape your list more than any ranking.

  • South Mumbai (Colaba to Worli): some of the city’s oldest and costliest preschools.
  • Western suburbs (Bandra to Borivali): the widest mix of local preschools and big chains.
  • Central and Harbour (Powai, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Mulund): growing fast, with many chain and local options.
  • Navi Mumbai and Panvel (Vashi, Kharghar, Kamothe, Kalamboli, Panvel, Karanjade): young families and new homes. This is where MNR Golden Kids runs 11 centres.

Book a school visit or send an admission enquiry

12 questions to ask on a preschool visit

  1. What does a normal day look like, hour by hour?
  2. How many kids and adults are in each class?
  3. What training do the teachers have? How long have they been here?
  4. How do you help a child who cries at drop-off?
  5. Who can watch the CCTV? How do you check who picks up?
  6. Are you on Maharashtra’s preschool list?
  7. How often will you tell me how my child is doing?
  8. How much screen time, if any, is in the day?
  9. What is the full yearly fee, with every extra?
  10. What are the refund rules?
  11. Do you offer daycare or longer hours?
  12. Where do most of your kids go for Class 1?

Red flags to walk away from

  • Pushing 3- and 4-year-olds to read and write, or daily homework
  • No outdoor or active play in the day
  • Vague answers on training, class size or safety
  • Teachers who change every few months
  • Fees that are not in writing
  • A school that won’t let you watch a class

After your visits: how to decide

Sit down with your notes the same evening. Then ask yourself four things:

  • Did my child want to stay and play?
  • Did the teachers kneel down and talk to the kids?
  • Did I get clear answers on safety and fees?
  • Can we make this trip every day, in the rain too?

If one school wins on most of these, that is your answer. If two are close, visit both again at drop-off time. You will learn a lot from the first ten minutes of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

No one preschool is best for every child. The best one for you is close to home, play-based, safe and on the state list. It has kind, trained teachers. Pick three to five schools near you and visit each one in class time.

In Maharashtra, a child must be at least 3 by 31 December of the school year to join nursery. For 2027-28, that usually means kids born in 2024. Each school sets its own age for playgroup. MNR Golden Kids takes kids from 2 years.

It depends on the area and the brand. Lists of well-known Mumbai preschools show about ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 a month, plus joining fees. Ask each school for all yearly fees in writing.

Most schools take calls from September to December. They confirm seats in January and February. Good schools fill up fast, so start your visits in October.

Neither is better for every child. Montessori often suits calm kids who like to work alone. Play-way suits active kids who love to talk and move. Many good preschools mix both.

More and more, yes. Since April 2025, private preschools for kids aged 3 to 6 must sign up on the state's Pre-School Registration Portal. The state also plans a new law to set clear rules for them.

Most of the time, yes. A short trip means a rested, happy child. A good school nearby often suits a 3-year-old better than a big name 45 minutes away.

Yes. We run 11 centres in Navi Mumbai and Panvel. There are three in Kamothe and two in Karanjade. There is one each in Kalamboli, Takka, Old Panvel, Koproli (New Panvel), Palaspe and Kon. Classes run from Playgroup to Senior KG.

The right preschool is the one where your child feels safe, known and curious. Use the checklist. Visit in class time. Trust what you see on the kids' faces. If you live in Navi Mumbai or Panvel, we would love to show you a day at MNR Golden Kids. Book a visit at your nearest centre or call the numbers above.
